Wausau couple files complaint with WEC over ballot box concerns

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – A Wausau couple has filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Elections Commission, citing what they say are five problems with the city’s current ballot box.

Wausau added ballot box in 2022 for truants.

The couple is asking the WEC to review the size of the box opening, as items larger than the envelope can be placed inside. And check if it’s safe. They also say that the drop box should only be for absentee coupons.

Currently, Wausau residents can use the box for payments and other city requests. Complainants say that the box should have a mark that it is intended for absentee coupons. They also say that the box should indicate when the final removal of the contents will take place, and once the box is removed, it is secured so that nothing else can be placed inside.

Like, the ballot is not in a lighted place, which is also a violation.

The complaint is published on the WEC website. Click here to view it.

On Oct. 23, the WEC acknowledged receipt of the complaint and informed City Clerk Caitlin Bernarde, Deputy Clerk Cody Hart and Wausau CFO Marianne Groat of the complaint. Respondents have until November 11 to respond. The pair is then allowed to give their own answer.

After receiving all approved applications, Commission staff will review the information and draft a decision letter for the Commission’s consideration and decision at the next meeting.
