Peter Windsor shares the key ‘problems’ he noticed in the footage of Oscar Piastre’s McLaren on-board car

After a promising start to the second half of the F1 season this year, Oscar Piastre suffered back-to-back disappointing weekends in Austin and Mexico.

Piastri has not been on the podium since his third place at the Singapore Grand Prix, reaching P5 and P8 at the US and Mexican Grands respectively.

Qualifying has been one of the biggest hurdles for him to contend with his teammate this season Lando Norrisafter an ignominious exit in Q1 in Mexico which put him 17th on the grid.

Piastre admitted he needs to do a “better job” while speaking to the media after the race weekend, especially given that McLaren are now under pressure from Ferrari in Championship of constructors and all points are valuable.

Peter Windsor believes he noticed something on Piastri’s dashcam that may be the cause of his qualifying issues while appearing on the Cameron CC podcast.

Peter Windsor believes Oscar Piastri is ‘overly aggressive’ compared to F1 rivals

Piastri showed he can muscle past Norris at the start of races at both the Hungarian and Italian Grands Prix this season, but according to Windsor, that aggressiveness is affecting his driving in qualifying.

“Carlos has almost reached a Lando Norris level in terms of how he’s toned down everything he’s done over the last 18 months,” Windsor said.

“His corners are a bit tighter than before and I think that’s just the years of living with Charles Leclerc and I’d say he was up there with Land.

“Oscar is still shorter than both of them, but he still has problems with being too aggressive on the gas and brakes.”

McLaren needs Oscar Piastre to do a “better job” in Sao Paulo

This means McLaren have an opportunity to secure a lockout on the front row of the grid, although Ferrari’s pace in qualifying has been impressive recently.

Carlos Sainz will want to go to a high position with the team Charles Leclerc still has a mathematical chance of challenging for the title with four races remaining.
