Delphi murder trial: Richard Allen’s confession implicates wife, mother in murders Libby Herman, Abby Williams

DELPHI, Indiana — On the twelfth day of the gruesome trial, jurors heard phone calls made by Delphi double-murder suspect Richard Allen.

During the calls, you can hear Allen confessing to his wife and mother that he killed Libby Herman and Abby Williams.

Libby, 14, and her best friend, Abby Williams, 13, were walking along a hiking trail in rural Delphi when their throats were slit and left in the woods on February 13, 2017. Their bodies were found the next day.

Richard Allen was arrested more than five years later when police said an unexpended round at the crime scene matched Allen’s gun.

Jurors in the double slaying of Richard Allen in Delphi, Indiana, heard tapes of Allen’s phone calls to his wife and mother on Thursday.

The girls were found dead with their throats slit near the Monon High Bridge in February 2017. Allen was arrested more than five years later when police said an unexpended shot at the scene matched Allen’s gun.

Testimony Thursday morning related to seven phone calls made by Allen from prison.

They were recorded by prosecution witness Brian Garshman, an Indiana State Police trooper.

Harshman testified that he wiretapped 700 of Allen’s phone calls and monitored his text messages and video chats.

On Wednesday, a clinical psychologist said Allen told her he was scared of something when he allegedly led the girls down the hill. Allen said that’s when he forced Abby and Libby to cross Deer Creek and killed them.

Officer Garshman testified Thursday that he believes Allen was spooked by Brad Weber’s van because Weber, who lives near the crime scene, owns a 2000 Ford Econoline van. He said the time it took Weber to drive home from work matched the time of the murders.

Garshman concluded his testimony by telling jurors that after listening and re-listening to 700 of Allen’s calls, he believed the voice in the “Bridge Guy” video belonged to Allen.

Defense attorney Brad Rozzi noted that many people were suspected of being the man in the video, including Brad Weber. He also noted that police never investigated how many vans were registered in Carroll County at the time.

Each of the calls played in court Thursday included a confession to the murder.

Here are some of Allen’s quotes from those calls:

Richard Allen’s phone conversation with his wife Katie:

Richard: “If it’s too much, call the investigators and I’ll tell them whatever they want.”

Richard: “I just really love you. If anything happens, I will see you in the next life.”

Richard: “I did it. I killed Abby and Libby.”

Katie: “No, I didn’t.”

Richard: “Yes, I am.”

Katie: “Why did you say that? I know you didn’t say. Something is wrong here.”

Richard: “I think maybe I’m out of my mind.”

Katie: “Are you sure you want to talk to me on the phone?”

Richard: “I need you to know I did it.”

Katie: “No, you don’t feel well.”

Richard: “I need to know if you still love me.”

Katie: “Yes”. (cries)

Richard: “I may have to spend the rest of my life here. If I get the electric chair or the death penalty, will you be with me? I killed Abby and Libby.”

Katie: “No, you didn’t. (cries)

Richard: “I did it, Katie. I did it. Do you still love me?”

Katie: “Yes, I do. But you didn’t do that.”

Richard: “I don’t want to upset you. Sorry. I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know if I’ve lost my mind.”

Katie: “Honey, you can’t call me and talk like that.”

Richard: “I’m sorry. I didn’t want to do that. Now I will have to kill myself.”

Katie: “You have nothing to do with it.”

Richard: “It seems to me that I am already in hell. I don’t understand what’s going on.”

Katie: “Me too.”
