Valencia’s regional government has come under fire for allegedly failing to adequately prepare for flash floods.

“There are governments that privatize and dismantle when they come to the institutions, and there are governments that are proud of it,” said Gabriel Ruffian of the Catalan Left Republicans (ERC).

He was referring to the conservative administration of Carlos Mason, who dismantled Valencia’s emergency group (UVE) after taking office in 2023 on the grounds that it was ineffective.

Speaking on radio, Mr Mazon defended his stance on the crisis, saying “experts are talking about an absolutely unprecedented situation”.

He also responded to claims that flood warnings were not reliable enough, saying they had been issued “in the right way”.
