In the state of Georgia, a lifeguard was shot while helping a driver who hit a deer

MORELAND, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A Coweta County community is mourning the loss of one of its fire chiefs in what they’re calling a “senseless tragedy.”

Coweta County Fire Department says Battalion Chief Bart Cauthen, 54, of Moreland, was killed Sunday night in Chambers County, Alabama while assisting a motorist.

According to Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, AlabamaA preliminary investigation indicates Cauthen was trying to help a driver who hit a deer while driving on County Road 267. A resident of the area, identified as William Randall Franklin, opened fire on Cauthen and the person who hit the deer. the authorities said.

The sheriff’s office says Cauthen, the driver he was helping and Franklin were wounded in the shootout. Chief Cauthen died of his injuries at the scene. The other two were taken by helicopter to the nearest trauma centers.

Authorities say there are warrants out for Franklin’s arrest for murder. He will be arrested after his release from Piedmont Medical Center.
