A Mumbai court has granted a five-day remand to Shariful Islam Shehzad, who was arrested for allegedly breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan’s residence and injuring him and his staff. The incident occurred during an attempted robbery late Wednesday night. Shariful, a Bangladeshi national living in Mumbai under a false name, was arrested early Thursday morning in Thane. In court, the accused stated that he had been framed and denied the charges.

Who is Shariful Islam Shehzad?

According to police, Shariful Islam Shehzad had crossed into India illegally and was living in Mumbai under the alias Bijoy Das. They are checking his connections and a possible support network that helped him gain a foothold in the city. The police also found that Shariful acted according to a plan, targeting the high-security area of Bandra, where Saif Ali Khan lives.

Police are looking for answers and evidence

During the trial, the police asked for 14 days in custody, but were given five to continue questioning Shariful. They discovered that Saif Ali Khan had been stabbed six times during the altercation, one of which was dangerously close to the spine. The weapon, a knife that split into three pieces, is a key piece of evidence. While one shrapnel has been recovered from the actor’s body, the other is still missing. Authorities are also looking for blood-stained clothing that Shariful allegedly hid after the attack to match blood samples as evidence.

The accused declares his innocence

Shariful’s lawyer Dinesh Prajapati argued in court that the allegations are baseless and motivated by Saif Ali Khan’s celebrity status. “We said in his defense that nothing was taken from him. They have not provided any document to prove that he is a Bangladeshi citizen,” Prajapati stated. Shariful claims that he is the scapegoat in this high-profile case.
