A 75-year-old man talks about the horrific attack and believes that the waitress saved his life

We’re learning more about the violent attack that took place in East Bakersfield on Friday. One survivor, Danny, 75, told Eyewitness News about his encounter and the brave waitress who came to his aid.

I was scared for my life to tell you the truth,” Danny said.

At around 5:00 a.m. on Oct. 25, Danny said he parked at a shopping center near Auburn and Oswell streets to attend a Bible study at Honey I’m Home. While waiting, he saw a person standing by the window of his car who seemed to be saying something.

“Their mouths were moving, so I opened the door and got out,” Danny said. “The person took off their hoodie and it was a young girl.”

After he got out of the car, someone came up behind him and hit him on the back of the head with a fire extinguisher.

“I fell back into the car and was doused with fire extinguisher,” he said. “Then they hit me in the mouth with it.”

His grandson, Dakota Massey, shared surveillance footage of the attack. In this shot, the attackers appear to be distracted, and at this intervening moment they are looking away. Danny can be seen driving away.

According to Eyewitness News, the waitress “Honey, I’m home” saw what was happening and shouted at the attackers. Security footage shows the group turning away from Denny’s and they can be seen walking towards a waitress on the restaurant’s walkway.

“She was beaten by two young men and a young woman,” said Todd Schreiberg, co-owner of Honey I’m Home. “They used a fire extinguisher as a weapon.”

Danny told us he only found out about her brave actions after the incident.

I appreciate everything, she’s my hero,” Danny said. “She turned them away from me and I didn’t know it at the time.

According to Danny, he believes there were three attackers in total, two young men and one young woman. Schreiberg says he doesn’t want the incident to scare people and that he wants public officials to take action.

The Bakersfield Police Department is currently investigating the case.
