Teens in Utah arrested for allegedly stealing cars and shoplifting

SALT LAKE CITY — Two Utah teenagers are in custody accused of stealing cars they weren’t old enough to drive and then ramming them into stores to rob them.

Since the suspects are minors, their identities have not been released.

Just over a week ago, detectives say the suspects pulled into a T-Mobile store in Mill Creek in the middle of the night, jumped out and tried to take merchandise. However, they did not succeed and ran away.

A few days later, the same suspects allegedly carried out a successful break-and-take at a mobile phone store in Cairns.

The suspects never covered their faces during the crimes, and investigators were able to identify them from surveillance video and later arrested the two juveniles at their homes.

“…we were able to identify not only in Salt Lake County, Utah, these individuals were going around, breaking into businesses, stealing large and expensive items and causing damage to businesses,” said Sgt. Amy Reiss.

The vehicles used in the break and enter crimes were stolen and police believe the suspects have been involved in similar incidents on the Wasatch Front over a long period of time. The Metro Gang Unit added that the teenagers are documented gang members.

Police are continuing to search for the male and female suspects, and anyone with information is asked to call Unified Police at 801-840-4000.
