28 workers who were trapped after a part of the Kannauj railway station collapsed have been rescued

Kannauj:

The rescue operation at the Kannauj railway station after a building collapsed ended on Sunday morning with rescue workers pulling out 28 workers safely after a 16-hour overnight operation, officials said. It was reported there that all those rescued were hospitalized for treatment. No fatalities have been reported.

The formwork of a building under construction on the station’s premises collapsed on Saturday afternoon, trapping workers.

Rescue teams, including personnel from national and state disaster response forces and railroads, worked through the cold night to clear the debris and pull trapped workers to safety.

District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukl visited the spot on Sunday morning, expressing relief that no one was killed in the tragic incident.

CCTV footage has emerged showing a worker trying to fix the formwork (a temporary structure used to support concrete) as the roof collapses. The footage shows that the beam the worker was carrying hit the formwork, causing it to slip and eventually fall.

The North Eastern Railway (NER) on Saturday constituted a three-member committee to investigate the cause of the collapse. The committee will include Chief Planning and Design Engineer, Additional Railway Manager (Izzatnagar) and Chief Security Officer, Railway Protection Force.

The construction was carried out under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) aimed at improving the infrastructure of the Kannauj railway station.

NER officials have announced ex gratia for the affected workers: Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries and up to Rs 2.5 lakh for those with serious injuries.
