A woman rushes to help residents during a fire

Oklahoma City (KFOR) – After that, a good Samaritan came to help a subway rehabilitation center caught fire early Wednesday morning.

“When I came out here, it was like I set the back of the building on fire!” Briana Coleman said.

Around 1:45 a.m., Coleman could see flames coming from the Catalyst Behavioral Services facility near NE 16th St. and N Lottie Ave.

“The wind was blowing, and then the fire seemed to rise. It was like it was about to start spreading through the building,” Coleman said. “All I could think about was everyone.”

So Coleman quickly sprung into action, frantically trying to get the employee’s attention.

“I thought, I’m going to bang on that door until somebody comes and opens that door,” Coleman said.

Fortunately, someone finally did.

“I just told him, ‘Hey, I can help you, like get all these people out of the building like the building’s on fire,'” Coleman said. “He pressed the alarm and said yes. I just helped him down each corridor like hey hey and all the way to the last hall. And then the last person, we all left together, and that’s it.”

Crews told KFOR that the fire started in the facility’s kitchen.

“We were taking heavy fire that could be seen from the outside,” said Battalion Chief Kyle Durham of OKCFD. “It was mostly contained in the kitchen area, the kitchen and the dining room of the facility.”

Fortunately, firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. Both theirs and Coleman’s efforts paid off as all residents of the facility made it out safely.

“I was loud, I was very, very loud, I probably disturbed their peace,” Coleman said. “But listen, it meant I saved a lot of lives. And I love it, I’m a nurse.”

The fire chief said the damage to the building is likely between $20,000 and $25,000.
