La Liga is taking its sour row with Barcelona to court amid the fallout from the cash-strapped Catalans being allowed to sign Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.

Barcelona have finally been given the green light to sign Olmo for next season following a previous controversial ban which occurred when they attempted to re-register the former RB Leipzig signing.

Spain Olmo joined the Blaugrana for £50m in the summer and Barcelona have been forced to get creative in their efforts to make him an official in Hansi Flick’s squad.

Olmo’s re-signing process was expected to be easy, with LaLiga’s strict financial laws leading to a financial crisis at Barcelona and the club failing to renew the registrations of Olmo and his team-mate Victor as they were over the salary cap, with the added danger of Olmo being able to leave for free , if not registered.

The ugly affair ended with the Supreme Sports Council (CSD) giving them permission to provisionally register both Olmo, a target for several Premier League sides, and Pau Victor.

However, rival clubs strongly criticized the decision, and the league launched a legal battle against the CSD’s decision.

La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation were given no chance to react to the CSD’s approval of the Catalan duo’s resignation and now claim it was a mistake because they were unable to defend their position before interim measures were taken.

The exceptional circumstances of the case forced the CSD to defend its one-of-a-kind decision, saying banning the registration of both Olmo and Victor would cause significant damage to the players, Barcelona and even the interests of the Spanish national team.

La Liga is trying to counter their position through a rule in the RFEF General Regulations that prohibits the re-registration of a player removed from the squad during the same season.

The possible penalty could see the CSD’s decision overturned as invalid if LaLiga succeeds.

Earlier announcing their success in signing the key duo, Barcelona beamed: “Good news for FC Barcelona. Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have been registered for La Liga and are therefore available for selection by coach Hansi Flick, including for Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final at 20:00 CET,” Barcelona said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Sports Council (CSD) announced the ban, giving the green light to the two players.

Both players will be allowed to play again in La Liga after weeks of uncertainty.

Olmo and Victor were included in Barcelona’s Supercopa squad despite being ineligible to play, but were not named in the starting line-up or substitutes for the semi-final against Atlético.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it proved a controversial call to allow Barca to sign the two stars, with arch-rivals Atletico Madrid quick to challenge the decision, questioning whether it undermined their aim of “fair competition”.

Atletico Madrid wants to express its deep concern about the situation in Spanish football following the resolution adopted this Wednesday by the Supreme Council of Sport. We believe this decision puts the current system at risk, calling into question the rules of the game,” Los Colchoneros said.

“The sports law itself includes and protects economic control over La Liga, but this ruling puts it at risk. The economic control of LaLiga has been the main tool that has been able to transform our football into a solvent sector, a process admired by international countries.

“Our club, like all members of La Liga before this resolution, followed the rules of economic control and will continue to do so. In fact, in order to compete at the level we have done in recent years, we have decided to carry out various capital increases, despite the enormous effort that this entails.

“This government intervention sets a very dangerous precedent because it opens the door to breaking the rules and making the same serious mistakes of the past. Atlético de Madrid remains committed to strict and responsible management. Without clear and equal rules for everyone, fair competition is impossible.”

Barcelona revealed their plans to file a complaint last week after both La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) rejected their latest attempt to re-register the duo and they subsequently went to court.

The CSD said that not accepting the preventive measure “would cause serious economic and sporting damage to the club and, above all, to the players” and would also “harm the interests of the Spanish national team” and La Liga.

The CSD verdict also does not mean that Olmo and Viktor will be eligible for the rest of the season. Instead, the decision is an acknowledgment that Barcelona’s appeal, which was presented in the form of a 52-page document, has a solid legal basis.

The body now has a period of up to three months to study the case before making a final decision. Meanwhile, Olmo and Victor will be able to play as usual.

However, the Olmo re-registration saga may have consequences in the future.

Barcelona forward Rafinha warned on Tuesday that problems with Olmo could prevent future transfer targets from joining.

“I can’t say the opposite, otherwise I would be lying,” added Rafinha.
