A gas leak is believed to have caused the explosion at a rented house in Punxton

Officials with the Punxsutton Fire Department are releasing more details about a house explosion at a Punxsutton home Thursday.

Investigators believe the home, located on Hill Street, exploded when the tenant opened the front door after fresh air reportedly mixed with a suspected gas leak inside the home.

Firefighters say the back wall of the rented house was blown off as a result of the explosion.

The authorities note that the house did not catch fire during the explosion.

Investigators say the occupant of the home suffered burns and was taken to Punxsatony Hospital by EMS, then flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital.

The condition of the tenant is currently unknown.

The state fire marshal continues to assist in the investigation, officials added.

Jefferson County emergency officials said one person was hospitalized after a suspected explosion at a home in Punxton Thursday afternoon.

Officials from Elk Run Vol. Fire company They say crews were dispatched to a home located along the 100 block of Hill Street just before 1:30 p.m.

Firefighters say one resident was transported from the scene with unspecified injuries.

Authorities say the cause of the suspected explosion is under investigation and a state fire marshal has been called in to assist.
