“They will mow you down like skittles”

Seeing wildlife in the wild is always fun, but there is such a thing as getting too close for comfort.

Instagrammer Turon Yellowstone (@touronsofyellowstone) posted a video a large number of tourists, including children, standing very, very close to an extremely large bison. While the bison is just grazing, they are so close that he could do a lot of damage if he was spooked.

They captioned the video: “No one is safe around these 2,000 pound beasts, they will mow you down like skittles. Be careful with the bison.”

Approaching animals is dangerous not only for people, but also for wildlife. According to the Humane Society of the United States, people hurt animals and even die regularly just by getting too close to them. Some are hit by cars, while others are injured by well-intentioned tourists.

CNN reported that a baby bison in Yellowstone even had to be euthanized after he got used to being too close to people because he inadvertently put them in danger.

There are a number of solutions to these problems. If we elect pro-climatic candidatesmaybe they can introduce stricter laws so people don’t get too close to animals because of the stiff fines they face. Fines seem high stop littering in Thailand’s natural areas and this may also work to solve this problem.

Building more wildlife crossings in national parks and surrounding areas can also help reduce harm to animals. At the end of the day, we need to work together to keep both tourists and animals safe while maintaining the amazing experience of seeing these creatures in the wild.

Commenters seem to agree that the tourists in the video should think again.

“Do they think there is an invisible force field? Do they think they are at Disney? Have they ever been injured by an animal? What?” asked one.

Another said: “They should be thankful that poop trumps rage.”
