Malaysia’s interior minister said police are investigating the son on suspicion of intimidation

SEPANG, Selangor: Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that his son is under police investigation on charges of criminal intimidation.

“My son is not above the law and if there is a report against him, the police must conduct a thorough and fair investigation,” he told reporters during a working visit to Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Saturday (Jan 11).

“My principle is that none of us is above the law, including me and my own child,” he said, as quoted by Malay Mail.

“If the investigation finds that there are grounds, let the court process take its course,” he added, according to the New Straits Times.

Earlier this week, Inspector General of Police Razaruddin Hussain said the police had completed their investigation into the criminal case of intimidation against the son of a federal minister.

At that time, the identity of the minister was not disclosed.

Razarudin said the investigation material was handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) on Monday for further instructions after the complainant filed a police report on January 1, local media reported.

“The DPP has instructed an investigator to obtain a report on the pregnancy test of a woman who is said to have been threatened by the minister’s son,” he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.

“The initial investigation showed that the minister’s son married a woman last September,” he said.

Razarudin said they are waiting for the verification of the marriage certificate to strengthen the investigation.

“I want to emphasize once again that the police will not protect anyone who is involved in an offense, even if it concerns a minister or his family.

“The investigation is transparent and the police will bring those responsible to justice,” he told the New Straits Times.

This follows claims that the minister’s son allegedly threatened a woman who asked him to take responsibility for her seven-week pregnancy.

The incident allegedly happened when the minister’s son was talking to the woman and several other witnesses at a house in Telok Air Tawar, Butterworth, Penang on Dec 24 last year, local media reported.

The case is being investigated under Article 506 of the Criminal Code for criminal intimidation.
