A drunk driver crashed into a parked Illinois police car

CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — A drunk driver was arrested after crashing into an Illinois State Police patrol car on Interstate 55 Tuesday, police said.

According to ISP, at 11:39 p.m., an officer was pulled over on the side of the interstate near Joliet Road while investigating an earlier crash.

A northbound Jeep failed to yield and crashed into the trooper’s vehicle.

Police said the officer was not in the car at the time.

The driver of the Jeep, Charles Ruczynski, 53, of Chicago, was taken to a local hospital and later charged with failure to yield to a stopped emergency vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The ISP says there were 20 “Move Over Law” related crashes in 2024, and 9 soldiers were injured.
