Jail for man who set fire to car during Hull riot

A man who attacked police officers and set fire to a car during Hull riots has been jailed for 45 months.

Tony Malchinok, 35, pleaded guilty to rioting and arson at a preliminary hearing.

Prosecutor Jennifer Gatland handed Hull Crown Court CCTV footage of Malchinok kicking a police car and “aggressively throwing at officers” outside the Royal Hotel in Ferensway on August 3.

Later footage shows him smashing the window of a car in the garage’s forecourt, leaning over and setting it on fire, completely destroying the car.

Ms Gatland told the court that the defendant “played a leading role” in the riots that followed an anti-immigration demonstration in Hull city center and was “present at all events that day”.

In mitigating the sentence, his lawyer Billy Torbett said his client had a troubled upbringing and mental health issues and was “repentant and deeply regrets his actions”.

Sentencing, Judge John Thackeray KC said Mulchinock, of Stroud Crescent West in Hull, had played a “very prominent role” in the violence.

“This was part of 12 hours of racist, hate-fueled mob violence that resulted in police officers being injured,” the judge said.

He said that Malchinok set the car on fire, and the family, including children who were in a nearby garage, “were scared when they heard threats to kill them.”

Judge Thackeray increased the sentence to reflect that both offenses were racially aggravated.
