A 30-year-old female ophthalmologist was allegedly sexually harassed by a 48-year-old man for the past nine months in Noida, senior police officers said on Monday, adding that the doctor finally approached the police on Saturday after the suspect approached the police . began to despise her professionally.

Police said the 30-year-old woman is an ophthalmologist and lives in Noida.

In her complaint to the police, she said, “On April 5, 2024, the suspect Piyush Dutt Kaushik visited my clinic for treatment as he was suffering from severe left eye disease and very poor vision.”

After conducting the necessary examinations, the doctors advised him to undergo an operation. “During one of his examinations, Kaushik made obscene comments at her in the presence of a nurse,” said a police officer involved in the investigation, adding that the doctor later told her parents about the incident. But, fearing public slander, she did not contact the police.

The doctor claimed that since then Kaushik started harassing her. “He started calling me often at odd hours. Considering him as a patient, I answered his calls but noticed his persistent attempts to engage in unrelated personal conversations,” she said in the FIR.

The suspect, who identified himself as a lawyer, allegedly began threatening the doctor that he would tarnish her professional image after she stopped taking his calls and blocked him, police said. “When Kaushik started defaming the doctor professionally in WhatsApp groups, she finally decided to file a complaint,” said the officer.

“A case under Sections 75(2) (sexual harassment) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the Sector 39 police station on Saturday evening on the victim’s complaint and further investigation is underway. ongoing,” said Manish Kumar Mishra, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida.
