Shackleton later said the suspect was gone when he arrived, although he was on the couch at his ex-partner’s address when the officer arrived.

He later admitted he had made “genuine mistakes” but denied trying to deliberately mislead the investigation.

During the hearing, it was found that he had breached the following standards of professional conduct – duties and responsibilities, honesty and decency, discreditable conduct and order and instructions.

In addition to the fact that he was dismissed from the police force, he was also placed on the list of non-prisoners.

Chief Constable Kate Meynell, who chaired the commission, said Shackelton’s actions were “a continuous series of lies about the existence of evidence which was an integral part of the investigation”.

“Integrity and decency are paramount for all police officers and this officer’s actions fell far short of the high standards expected.”

“His behavior undermines public trust and therefore he should be fired and blacklisted,” she added.
