Michael Connelly’s latest bestseller Waiting tells the story of Renee Ballard and the murder of Black Dahlia

A: I usually do the smart thing and rarely reread my books, so there’s no, “Oh shit, that didn’t work. I wish I had done it better.” So, one downside to these TV shows is that if I’m going to participate, I have to re-read my books. I prefer to write like a shark: Keep moving forward.

Q: Does writing and producing a TV show influence your books?

A: It does. Maddie Bosch (Harry’s daughter, the new cop on Waiting) definitely had an impact on the TV show and it gets back to me. She was definitely the part I enjoyed writing the best. Until the last 10-12 years, when TV shows appeared, on every page of my books you saw the world through the eyes of the main character, whether it was Bosch or Haller. But when you’re doing a TV show, you can’t do that. You have to spread the word. An actor can’t be in every scene, so it led to the TV show developing the characters more than I did in my books. And it also goes back to developing more characters in the books.

Q: You’ve said that developing Ballard’s character rejuvenated you. Do you envision new characters with their own series?

A: I am always looking to challenge myself. When writing about the same characters, there are things that are easy and things that are difficult. But there is nothing like the satisfaction and satisfaction of discovering a whole new person and a new world. There will be one more (new). I’m actually writing one right now. It will be released next year.

Q: Can you say something about it? What is it called?
