Bodycam footage shows shocking moment American Olympic star Fred Curley tasered during altercation with police

American Olympic sprinter Fred Curley was arrested by police after a standoff with officers in Miami late Thursday night.

The 29-year-old, who won bronze in the 100 meters at the Paris Games last summer, faces charges of assault, resisting police and disturbing the peace following the incident.

Body camera footage released by Miami Beach police shows Curley arguing with a group of officers before a physical altercation broke out.

The sprinter was knocked to the ground, where the officer punched him several times and then used a Taser, police said.

According to the arrest report, police were investigating an unrelated active scene when Curley approached the scene and tried to force his way into his car, which was parked nearby.

Curley was ordered to go around the area, but he became argumentative with officers, leading to a scuffle.

Four officers tried to take Curley into custody while he was moving to avoid arrest, officials said.

“Despite officers’ efforts to de-escalate the situation, the defendant assumed a combative stance and continued to ignore their lawful commands,” police said in a statement.

“When law enforcement officers tried to detain him, he actively resisted their efforts.

“Consequently, emergency support was provided, a taser was effectively deployed and the accused was arrested without further incident.”

After being stunned with a Taser, Curley was taken to a local hospital and then to the Miami-Dade County Jail.

Local media in Miami reported that he appeared in court on Friday and has now been released on bail.

His lawyer said the incident was a “complete misunderstanding”.

In addition to his bronze medal in Paris, Curley won silver in the 100 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and gold at the 2022 World Championships.

He also won gold medals in the 4x100m and 4x400m and posted the sixth fastest time in history in the 100m at 9.76 seconds.

Curley is the only person ever to run under 9.80 seconds in the 100 meters, under 19.80 seconds in the 200 meters and under 43.80 seconds in the 400 meters.

Back in September, it was announced that he had signed a contract with Grand Slam Tracka new athletics league founded by Michael Johnson.

It is expected to make its GST debut later this year.
