Eric ten Haag felt that he had been “let down” by several senior players in the Manchester United squad, including Marcus Rashford and Casemiro.

On Monday, the Dutchman received his marching orders the day after a 2-1 defeat at West Ham, United’s fourth defeat in nine Premier League games, which saw them drop to 14th in the table.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of tonight’s Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City with the club hoping to attract Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon became the new permanent manager before the weekend.

Ten Heg leaves the team having won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in his two seasons in charge in Manchester.

That success at Wembley last May saved him from being sacked at the end of last season after a miserable finish to the Premier League campaign, but a lack of any real progress this season after receiving a major boost in the summer spelled the end .

Although the former Ajax boss is believed not to have lost the dressing room all the way, The Daily Star the Ten Hag report felt he was let down by some senior players, including Casemiro, Rashford and Anthony.

Casemiro joined United from Real Madrid in Ten Hoeg’s first summer in charge, enjoying an excellent first campaign in Manchester. However, the Brazilian struggled last season and was left out of the squad for the FA Cup final against City.

Rashford was one of the players to be disciplined by Ten Hag during his time in charge, and was left out of the starting eleven due to the January 2023 stoppage.

The forward was also forced to apologize to the manager for going to a pre-arranged birthday party last October just hours after United thrashed Manchester City 3-0 at home.

Rashford found himself in hot water again in February after missing training ahead of an FA Cup tie after being spotted partying in Belfast just hours before.

Anthony, meanwhile, has struggled since his £84m move from Ajax, managing just one Premier League minute this season.

Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho and Cobby Mainoo were among those who paid warm tributes to Ten Haag following the news of his sacking.
