BBC Scotland to expand SPFL coverage in 2025 with more live games and highlights

BBC Scotland has agreed a new contract to broadcast up to 30 Scottish league games per season and to show highlights of second-tier games and League One and Two fixtures online.

The existing deal allowed the broadcaster to show up to 20 Championship games live per season.

The weekly highlights programme, which will feature action from this division as well as the third and fourth tiers, will be broadcast on the BBC Sport website and app every Monday, starting at the start of the new year.

The new arrangements are in addition to the agreement between the BBC and the SPFL, which runs until the end of the 2028-2029 season.

Louise Thornton, head of BBC Scotland, said: “It’s great news for viewers that we’ve secured the rights to show more matches live and deliver a new highlights package.

“BBC Scotland has been home to the Championship’s Friday night broadcast since 2018 and we are delighted that this additional deal with the SPFL allows us to cover even more games in this exciting league.”

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster added: “It’s fantastic to extend our partnership with the BBC to show even more live William Hill Championship games.

“The league is known for its incredible excitement and drama and having up to 30 games broadcast live each season from the William Hill Championship is great news for Scottish football fans.

“Over the past two seasons, our social media team has done a great job creating a great highlights program available on YouTube. We are delighted that BBC Scotland will be taking over responsibility for this program in the new year. This is great news for fans wanting to catch up on all the best action from across our leagues.”
