Detroit police are investigating why Lions tight end Jameson Williams remains free after a gun was discovered

The Detroit Police Department is investigating why Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was not arrested after a gun was found in the vehicle he was a passenger in during a traffic stop.

Williams, who currently serves as a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policyOn October 8, he was nearly arrested for having a firearm in his car before being released by police.

Detroit police are now investigating why Williams was released without being jailed. according to WYZX News.

Williams was reportedly in the passenger seat of a car driven by his brother when Detroit police pulled them over and found two guns inside — one in the back seat and the other under the NFL player’s seat.

The gun under Williams’ seat was registered to him, even though he did not have a concealed handgun license.

Body camera footage showed officers telling Williams they would take him into custody before the publicist asked to be released.

“I play for the Lions, bro. I’m Jameson Williams,” he said. “Brother, I play for the Detroit Lions.

Williams’ brother then tried to claim the gun was his, before the gunman later admitted it was his.

“I got a gun for protection,” Williams said. “Do you know where I live? Detroit!”

Williams was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car while a police supervisor arrived at the scene.

The sergeant, believed to be a Lions fan based on what he saw of his cell phone on video camera, made several phone calls before returning the gun to Williams and letting them both go, a decision that is now being questioned.

“I believe there was probable cause to make an arrest and he was arrested by a patrol officer,” Detroit Police Chief Michael McGinnis said, according to WYZX News. “Therefore, he should have been taken to the Detroit Detention Center and taken into custody. (Chief James White) was very unhappy with the whole set of circumstances. Even going so far as to say he was angry.’

Williams could face concealed weapons charges if the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office decides to grant a warrant request filed by Detroit police.

The Lions released a statement on the matter, admitting they were aware of the situation shortly after the incident.

“Jameson immediately informed us that he was a passenger on a routine stop on October 8,” the team said. “We discussed the incident with him and kept the league informed of what we knew. We understand he was released without incident or report. We now understand that the Detroit Police Department is reviewing the matter. Jameson has retained an attorney and we will not comment out of respect for the legal process.”

Williams’ lawyer claims that the Lions star did not commit any crimes.

“On October 8, my clients were stopped allegedly for violating traffic rules. During the traffic stop, my clients were both cooperative and respectful of the police officers. The two handguns that were found in the vehicle were properly registered and the driver of the vehicle had the proper documents to carry them. We cooperated with law enforcement agencies and will continue to do so.”
