Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch are this week’s Radio Times cover stars

For a certain generation Day of the Jackal conjures up visions of Edward Fox, who outwitted the authorities in his attempt to assassinate French President Charles de Gaulle. It’s a great film, and as Eddie Redmayne, who plays the gun-for-hire in Sky Atlantic’s new adaptation, rightly tells us: “You don’t want to mess with something as brilliant as this.”

Lucky for us, he’s convinced, and in the modern-day remake of the original, he tries to escape from an MI6 agent played by Lashana Lynch who’s on his tail. Is it better than the original? I leave that up to you. But keep in mind that this is exciting stuff.

Don’t miss it either of Asiathe latest landmark series from the BBC’s Natural History Unit, in which the soothing tones of Sir David Attenborough guide us through the wilds of this vast continent. Sunday evenings are again in safe hands.

Finally, as some of you may know, boffins in the Radio Times have created an app that means you can now access all our recommendations and more on your smartphone. Click here to download it and try it out – it’s really not bad…
