A Little Rock mother is seeking justice nearly a year after the teenagers were gunned down

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas. It’s been nearly a year since the double slaying of two teenagers in Little Rock, and a family member said that while no arrests have been made, they won’t give up until justice is served.

Little Rock police officials said at the time that both victims, 13-year-old Deonta Gurley and 14-year-old Na’Qualo Smith, died at the scene of the shooting.

LRPD officers said they responded to a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of West 22nd Street shortly after 5 a.m. on Dec. 3 and found the teenagers.

Lashanna Smith said the boys ran away from home that night, a mistake she believes put them in the wrong place at the wrong time. Smith said they didn’t deserve to be killed and hopes justice will come soon.

“First they killed my little cousin in front of him and then they chased him down and killed him,” Smith said. “At the age of 14, he was chased around like an animal, he probably didn’t even know this person. It’s hard to live and deal with every day.”

Smith said she thinks they’re close to getting some answers, but they still need people who might know something to come forward.

“I feel that we are close. It took almost a year, but I feel like they’re close to getting that person,” Smith said. “I will never get closure, but justice will make me feel a lot better knowing the monsters because they are not the people who did this to my little cousin and son; they will end up where they belong.”

She says she only has one thing to say to the people in charge.

“Heaven is not coming to you, hell is coming to you, whether you get justice here or later, but he will get justice,” Smith said.

Smith misses her son’s smile and says she wishes she could tell him one more time how much she loves him.

“He would have turned 15 on August 12,” Smith said.
