Mother crashes car into Australian school fence, killing child and injuring 4

MELBOURNE, Australia — A mother picking up her child crashed her car into a school fence in Melbourne on Tuesday, fatally injuring one child and seriously injuring four others, police said.

The 40-year-old mother had picked up her child from Auburn South Primary School and was making a U-turn on the road outside when she crashed through a fence and into a table where five children were sitting just after 2.30pm local time. chas, insp. said Craig McAvoy.

“It appears to be a tragic incident,” McAvoy told reporters.

The 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died, police said in a statement.

Two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver was arrested at the scene and is in custody, the police said. Neither she nor her student passenger were injured.

Police interviewed the mother, McAvoy said, but had no new information. Investigators were working at the scene of the accident, collecting evidence.
