Detroit Lakes, Minnesota missionary killed in “act of violence” in Africa

“We have not seen a high level of violence in Angola. … It can be volatile, like many places in the world, but we have a really strong team in place,” he said. “We have a really honest person who was doing a really good job, and this just seems like a senseless act of violence.”

According to Todd, Shroyer was a police officer for about seven years before getting into real estate. He said Shroyer is well known in the town of 10,000. According to Todd, the family returned to Detroit Lakes in the summer and shared during a Sunday service about the missionary work they were doing in Africa, such as inviting members of the community to their home each week.

“They were just building relationships,” he said. “They held various events trying to get to know the children in the community.”

Angola is a large Portuguese-speaking country in southern Africa and a major oil exporter, but rising fuel prices have led to violent protests and alleged killings by Angolan security forces, Human Rights Watch reported.

Todd said he was humbled by Shroyer, who he said “embodies this fine, good and faithful servant.”

Together with his wife, Shroyer left children Bella, Avery, Oakley, Iva and Eden.
