3 teenagers injured in shooting at Union Co. soccer field

UNION COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – An investigation is underway after three people were injured in a shooting Sunday afternoon in Union County.

Sheriff Jeff Bailey said deputies were called to Union Medical Center around 1:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a gunshot victim.

“We got to the hospital and when we got there we talked to the victim and tried to get some information about what happened,” Bailey said.

Deputies soon learned about another victim.

“We have been advised that a second victim has been taken to the hospital,” explained Sheriff Bailey. “So that escalated the situation a little bit, we talked to both of those victims, one of those victims had to be airlifted.”

Bailey said deputies were dispatched to the residence of the third victim.”

“The other victim called 911, so we responded there, and this victim was right in the Spartanburg area,” Sheriff Bailey continued.

During the investigation, deputies learned that the shooting happened on the Buffalo football field near Buffalo Elementary School.

The three victims were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for further treatment, deputies said.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said all three victims were between 15 and 17 years old. Their condition is unknown.

Deputies said they believe the shooting may have been the result of an illegal drug deal, and no suspects have been arrested at this time.

“We’re still working on the case, and like I said, it’s sad that our youth are engaging in this kind of behavior at such a young age,” Bailey said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
