A police chase in New South Wales, Australia took a turn for the worse — literally — when officers ended up on railroad tracks after misjudging a roundabout while chasing a bicycle. The incident happened on Saturday in the western suburbs of Sydney.

It all started when police Officers recorded a motorcycle speeding on the Great Western Highway in Minchinbury. Instead of letting the driver get away, the officers gave chase in their BMW 530d Highway Patrol sedan. However, as they soon discovered, wrangling a beefy BMW through the streets of the suburbs is no easy task, especially when you’re up against a nimble two-wheeler.

The chase wound through Mount Druitt, sirens and patrol car lights flashing. But the BMW driver obviously underestimated the local track. Approaching the intersection of George St and Beams Ave, the officer failed to spot the ring in time. In a rather dramatic miscalculation, the car broke through a fence, drove into a ditch and indecently stopped on the railway tracks.

The sedan ended up on its belly on the rails. Literally a few minutes later, a train rumbled in the opposite direction, narrowly avoiding the immobilized BMW. This time luck was on the side of the officers as both came out of the crash with only minor injuries. But only with a difference of fractions of a second the result could have been much worse.

Authorities are now searching for the driver who fled the scene and are asking anyone with relevant information, dashcam or surveillance footage to come forward.
