Grand Forks teenager pleads guilty to killing young man – Grand Forks Herald

GRAND FORKS. On Monday, Dec. 9, an 18-year-old man from Grand Forks appeared in court, pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his young father.

Kazmer H. Haskins will undergo a pre-sentence investigation before Judge Jason McCarthy determines how much time Haskins will spend in prison.

A proposed plea deal filed in November said the state plans to seek 60 years with 20 suspended, leaving Haskins to serve 40 years in prison, while the defense agreed to argue for at least 15 years.

The deal also includes three years of supervised probation and more than $11,000 in restitution to four different family members of the victim.

Haskins is scheduled to be sentenced on March 7.

exactly one year

after the death of 24-year-old Anferni Economy.

The state said the hearing, scheduled for 9 a.m., would last several hours. Both sides will argue for a recommended sentence.

In the early morning hours of March 7, 2024, a group of people agreed to meet in the parking lot of a 36th Avenue South apartment complex for a physical altercation, according to an affidavit filed in the case.

Two groups met between rows of garages – one of four people, the other of seven. Video footage captured part of the ensuing altercation, the affidavit said.

In the video, Haskins can be seen brandishing a knife and at one point saying something along the lines of “Try something (expletive).”

Other comments heard on the recording include, “who killed who,” “we poked (expletive) too,” and “we died —” before the recording ends, according to the affidavit.

Law enforcement officers found Ekonomi dead at the scene with a stab wound to the torso.

Haskins sent a picture of the alleged murder weapon in a chat after the fight, and later admitted to police that he stabbed Economia in the chest, according to the affidavit. According to him, the injury was self-defense.

The knife, which still had blood on it, was found in Haskins’ home.

17 years old at the time, Haskins

was charged as an adult

for $500,000 cash or bond.
