A fire broke out at a restaurant in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden market on Monday, forcing several students of the institute to jump from the building to save their lives.

According to the police, a person with minor injuries was taken to the hospital.

Delhi Fire Chief Atul Garg said, “We received a fire call regarding a fire at Jungle Jamboree restaurant near Rajouri Garden metro station at 2:01 pm. 10 fire engines were immediately dispatched to the spot to douse the fire.”

There are no reports of casualties yet, the cause of the fire is unknown, he added. Thick smoke engulfed the area, causing panic among shopkeepers.

Many videos of the incident have gone viral on social media, showing people jumping from a nearby building to save their lives. Sources said there were more than 20 people at the time of the incident.

“Around 2:00 p.m., many shopkeepers witnessed black smoke coming out of the Jungle Jamboree restaurant. We immediately informed the police and the fire brigade. More than 25 people jumped from the outdoor seating area to the terrace of a nearby building to save their lives,” said the owner. shop Hanshyam Agarwal.

Meanwhile, authorities cordoned off the surrounding area to facilitate firefighting operations. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikhtra Veer said that around 2:00 pm, the Rajouri Garden Police Station received a report of an incident regarding a fire in a building on the corner of Najafgarh Road and Police Station Road.

“The building has various shops on the first floor, a restaurant called Jungle Jamboree (which has closed) and the Montes Archimedes Acquisition Corp. (MAAC) Rajouri on another floor. Damage is less on the first floors,” he said.

He added: “The fire has been brought under control and eight fire engines have been deployed so far. No casualties have been reported. However, the owners of the establishments were asked to report on all the people who were in the premises at that time.”

Another senior official said one person was reportedly injured during the rescue (no burns) and was being treated (no major injuries). “Further updates will be provided as they become available,” he added.

In response to the fire, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has informed that the food establishment is trading under valid Municipal Health Trading License namely M/s Jungle Jumboree at Premises No. A-23, First Floor, Rajouri Garden, New- Delhi -110027. “A letter was received from the Federal Tax Service regarding the revocation of the Fire Safety Certificate for the M/s Jungle Jumboree restaurant dated 10-21-2024, after which a request was received from the Licensee to refuse the health care trade license. Thereafter, on 01-11-2024, the medical services trading license was revoked and the revocation order and closure orders were served on the trader,” it added.
