Kenya: DCI summons Senator Thang’wa over funeral mayhem in Limuru

Nairobi — Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa has been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over Thursday’s funeral mayhem in Limuru, where former Vice President Rigati Gachagua said he was targeted.

In a statement, Senator Kiambu said he was summoned by the DCI to appear before them on Friday at their offices in Nyeri to provide information on the chaos after thugs disrupted the funeral.

“Joseph Chirchir, a police officer attached to DCI Limuru, is investigating an alleged offense of willful damage to the property of persons at the playground of Bibirioni Boys High School on 28/11/2024 at 15:00 and there is reason to believe that you, Senator Paul Karungo Thangwa, information that will assist me in my investigations,” the DCI stated.

Tang’wa, a close associate of former President Rigati Gachagua, however, described the challenge as intimidation, saying he was ready to appear at the DCI office in Nyeri.

“They are refusing to meet us at the CID headquarters on Kiambu Road but are summoning us to Nyeri because of the incident that happened in Limuru. This intimidation will not intimidate or silence us. See you in Nyeri,” he said.

The former MP alleged that the state was behind the Limuru incident where suspected thugs disrupted a burial accompanied by other leaders.

Gachagua claimed that the withdrawal of his security was intentional and made him vulnerable.

According to him, a certain group followed him to his car, which they attacked using stones and iron rods.

“As Kenyans are well aware, earlier this week the government withdrew the last aspects of my security that remained after the impeachment process that we are challenging,” he said.

On Thursday, thugs disrupted a funeral in Limura, forcing those present to flee for their lives.

Chaos erupted when former Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi stopped to resolve technical problems with his microphone.

Suddenly, the tent where Gachagua was sitting was dismantled, forcing those present, including the former deputy president, to flee.
